Equinor
Stock performance
History
Equinor was established as Statoil, a wholly state-owned oil company, when Norway began developing its North Sea oil and gas discoveries and deliberately chose to build national expertise and capture a larger share of the resulting wealth rather than rely solely on foreign oil majors. It was partially privatized through a 2001 stock listing while the Norwegian state retained majority ownership, and renamed itself Equinor in 2018 to signal a strategic shift toward broader energy activities, including offshore wind, alongside its core oil and gas business.
Business model
Equinor explores for, produces, and sells oil and natural gas, primarily from Norwegian continental-shelf fields in the North Sea, alongside a growing international portfolio and an expanding offshore-wind and renewable-energy business. Its close relationship with the Norwegian state channels a large share of profits into Norway's sovereign wealth fund, the largest in the world.
Market position
Equinor is the largest company in Norway and one of the major European oil and gas producers, holding a leading position in offshore North Sea production and increasingly in offshore wind development, an area where its deep offshore-engineering expertise from decades of oil platform construction gives it a natural advantage.
Country impact
Equinor is the cornerstone of the Norwegian economy, and its oil and gas revenue, channeled substantially into Norway's Government Pension Fund Global (the world's largest sovereign wealth fund), has funded decades of Norwegian public spending and long-term savings. Its production and investment decisions are treated as matters of significant national economic importance.
