ENEL Nicaragua
Stock performance
History
The Empresa Nicaragüense de Electricidad (ENEL) was created in 1994 by executive decree to take over power generation from the former state electricity institute, as Nicaragua restructured and partly privatized its power sector. Distribution was later privatized, while ENEL remained the state generator.
Business model
ENEL operates state-owned hydroelectric, geothermal, and thermal power plants and sells electricity to the national grid alongside private generators.
Market position
ENEL is Nicaragua's state power generation company, in a market where private wind, geothermal, biomass, and thermal plants also supply a large share of electricity.
Country impact
Nicaragua sharply increased the share of renewables in its electricity mix over the 2010s, reducing dependence on imported oil, and ENEL's hydropower and geothermal assets are part of that shift.
