Électricité de Guinée
Stock performance
History
Électricité de Guinée (EDG) is the state-owned concessionaire for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. Its supply was transformed in the 2010s by Chinese-built hydropower dams on the Konkouré River, Kaléta and Souapiti, which greatly increased capacity, although outages remain frequent.
Business model
EDG generates power from hydroelectric plants and thermal plants, buys electricity from independent producers, and sells it to households and businesses, but high losses and low bill collection leave it dependent on government subsidies.
Market position
EDG is the national electricity utility, while mining companies largely generate their own power.
Country impact
Guinea's hydropower potential is among the largest in West Africa, but unreliable power supply remains a major constraint on industry, and dry-season shortages, worsened after a December 2023 explosion at Conakry's main fuel depot, have periodically sparked protests.
