History
Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) was formed in 1977, two years after independence, by consolidating some 25 separate power companies and units, and was reorganized as a public enterprise in 1995.
Business model
EDM transmits and distributes electricity nationwide, buying much of its power from Cahora Bassa and independent gas-fired and solar plants, and is expanding the grid to rural areas as part of a national goal of universal access.
Market position
EDM is Mozambique's national electricity utility.
Country impact
Although Mozambique is a net power exporter, a large share of its population still lacks electricity, making EDM's grid expansion one of the country's central development challenges.
