History
EDP, Energias de Portugal, was formed by nationalizing and consolidating Portugal's fragmented electricity industry following the country's 1974 revolution, and was later privatized in stages from the 1990s onward as Portugal liberalized its energy sector, growing into one of Europe's larger utility companies with a particularly aggressive early push into renewable energy, especially wind power.
Business model
EDP generates, distributes, and supplies electricity across Portugal, Spain, Brazil, and the United States, with one of the most renewables-weighted generation portfolios among major European utilities, built through sustained investment in wind and, more recently, solar power over more than two decades.
Market position
EDP is one of the largest renewable-energy generators in the world relative to its overall size, and its EDP Renováveis subsidiary is one of the largest wind-power companies globally, giving Portugal an outsized presence in international renewable-energy markets relative to the country's small domestic size.
Country impact
EDP is one of the largest and most internationally significant companies in Portugal, and its early, aggressive renewable-energy strategy has made it a symbol of Portuguese success in clean-energy investment and export of expertise well beyond its home market.
