Digicel Haiti
Stock performance
History
Digicel, the Caribbean mobile group founded by Irish businessman Denis O'Brien, launched in Haiti in 2006 and quickly became the market leader, later absorbing the rival Comcel/Voilà network in 2012. After the 2010 earthquake it was one of the most visible private investors in Haiti's reconstruction.
Business model
Digicel Haiti sells mobile voice and data and business connectivity services, and runs MonCash, a mobile-money service widely used for transfers and payments, including receiving remittances.
Market position
Digicel is Haiti's largest mobile operator, ahead of Natcom.
Country impact
Mobile phones are the main communication and increasingly the main financial tool for Haitians, and MonCash helps many people without bank accounts send and receive money. Digicel's network has had to operate through repeated waves of gang violence that have damaged infrastructure and cut off areas of the country.
