Demerara Distillers
Stock performance
History
Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) consolidated Guyana's centuries-old rum industry, which grew up around the colony's sugar plantations, into a single company. It owns the Diamond Distillery, where historic wooden stills salvaged from closed plantation distilleries are still in use, and in the 1990s it launched the El Dorado range of aged rums that made Guyanese rum internationally known.
Business model
DDL produces and exports rum under its El Dorado brand and as bulk rum sold to other brands and blenders, and also has businesses in beverages, distribution, and shipping in Guyana and the region.
Market position
DDL is Guyana's dominant rum producer and one of the Caribbean's leading premium rum makers, competing with brands from Barbados, Jamaica, and elsewhere.
Country impact
DDL is one of Guyana's best-known exporters and largest private employers outside the oil sector, and its use of Demerara sugar molasses ties it to the country's historic sugar industry.
