Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat
Stock performance
History
Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) was established in 2008 as a state-owned corporation to take over electricity generation, imports, transmission, and distribution from the government ministry that had previously run them.
Business model
DABS buys most of the electricity it sells from neighboring Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran, supplementing it with domestic hydropower and other generation, and distributes it to customers in cities and towns.
Market position
DABS is Afghanistan's national power utility.
Country impact
Because a large share of Afghanistan's electricity is imported, DABS's ability to pay its foreign suppliers, which became much harder after 2021, directly determines whether cities like Kabul have power. Regional transmission projects such as CASA-1000 aim to make Afghanistan a transit route for Central Asian electricity.
