History
CotonTchad was created in 1971 to manage Chad's cotton sector, historically one of the country's main exports. After years of financial difficulty it was restructured as CotonTchad Société Nouvelle, and in 2018 the Singapore-based agribusiness group Olam bought a 60% stake, with the state and farmer cooperatives holding the rest.
Business model
CotonTchad buys seed cotton from smallholder farmers in southern Chad, gins it, and exports the cotton lint, while supplying farmers with seeds and inputs.
Market position
CotonTchad is the dominant cotton company in Chad.
Country impact
Cotton is one of the main sources of cash income for farmers in southern Chad, and the revival of the sector under private management is important for rural livelihoods outside the oil economy.
