History

Empresas Copec was founded as Compañía de Petróleos de Chile to import and distribute petroleum products in a country with limited domestic oil resources, and grew over subsequent decades under the ownership of the Angelini family into one of Chile's largest and most diversified business conglomerates, expanding well beyond fuel distribution into forestry, fishing, and other natural-resource industries. It became the flagship holding company of the broader Angelini Group, one of the most powerful family-controlled business empires in Chile.

Business model

Copec operates across fuel distribution and retail (including convenience stores at its fuel stations across Chile and other Latin American markets), forestry and wood products through its Arauco subsidiary — one of the largest forestry companies in the world — and fishing and other natural-resource businesses. This diversification across energy retail and natural-resource extraction gives the group exposure to several distinct Chilean and regional export industries.

Market position

Copec is the largest fuel retailer in Chile and, through its Arauco subsidiary, one of the largest forestry and wood-pulp producers in the world, giving the broader Copec group a significant position in global forestry-products export markets in addition to its core Chilean fuel-retail business. It competes with Chilean rival Enex in fuel retail and various international forestry companies through Arauco.

Country impact

Copec is one of the largest companies in Chile and, as the flagship of the Angelini Group, represents one of the most significant family-controlled conglomerates in the country. Its Arauco forestry operations are a major contributor to Chilean export revenue and a significant source of regional employment in Chile's southern forestry regions.
