History
The Compagnie Minière de l'Ogooué (Comilog) was founded in 1953 to mine the huge manganese deposit at Moanda in southeastern Gabon, which began exporting in the early 1960s. It is controlled by France's Eramet group, with the Gabonese state as a significant shareholder.
Business model
Comilog mines high-grade manganese ore at Moanda, processes part of it into manganese alloys and other products locally, and ships the rest by rail on the Trans-Gabon railway to the port of Owendo for export, mainly to steelmakers in China and elsewhere. It produced about 6.8 million tonnes of ore in 2024.
Market position
Comilog operates the world's largest high-grade manganese mine and is one of the world's leading manganese ore producers.
Country impact
Manganese is Gabon's second-largest export after oil, and together with its railway subsidiary Setrag, Comilog makes Eramet the largest private employer in Gabon. The government has announced plans to end exports of unprocessed manganese, pushing for more local processing.
