History

CK Hutchison took its current form in 2015, when tycoon Li Ka-shing restructured his empire, combining his Cheung Kong group, which he had founded as a plastic-flowers maker in 1950, with Hutchison Whampoa, a historic British trading and dockyard group whose roots go back to the 19th century and which Li had taken control of in 1979. Li retired as chairman in 2018, handing over to his elder son Victor Li.

Business model

CK Hutchison is a diversified multinational with businesses in container ports, retail through A.S. Watson (Watsons, Superdrug, Kruidvat, and other health and beauty chains), infrastructure such as power and water networks, telecoms (the Three brand in several European countries, including the VodafoneThree combination in the UK), and an energy stake in Canada's Cenovus. Most of its revenue comes from outside Hong Kong.

Market position

CK Hutchison is one of the largest conglomerates headquartered in Hong Kong and owns one of the world's largest port networks. A 2025 agreement to sell most of its port business outside China, including terminals at both ends of the Panama Canal, to a consortium led by BlackRock and Terminal Investment Ltd became entangled in US-China geopolitical tensions.

Country impact

As the flagship of Li Ka-shing's group, long Hong Kong's most prominent business empire, CK Hutchison has been a symbol of the city's role as a base for globally active Chinese capital. Its gradual shift of assets toward Europe and elsewhere has been closely watched as a signal of how Hong Kong's business elite views the city's prospects.
