History

Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) descends from the colonial ports and railways administration created in 1931 and has been the state ports and railway company since independence. Its lines, built to connect the landlocked interior of southern Africa to the Indian Ocean, were badly damaged during the civil war and have since been rebuilt and expanded, often with private partners.

Business model

CFM operates and manages railways and ports, including Maputo, Beira, and Nacala, directly or through concessions and joint ventures, earning fees from moving coal, minerals, fuel, and general cargo for Mozambique and neighboring countries.

Market position

CFM is Mozambique's dominant transport infrastructure company, and its corridors compete with South African and Tanzanian routes for regional cargo.

Country impact

Transit trade for South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi through Mozambican ports is one of the country's most important sources of foreign exchange, making CFM a strategic national asset.
