History

Cemex was founded as Cementos Hidalgo, a single cement plant in northern Mexico, and grew over the twentieth century into one of the largest building-materials companies in the world through a strategy of aggressive international acquisitions, particularly from the 1990s onward, when it purchased major cement producers in Spain, the United States, and elsewhere. This rapid international expansion made Cemex one of Mexico's most globally recognized multinational companies, though a heavy debt load taken on during acquisitions left it financially exposed during the 2008-2009 global financial crisis, prompting years of subsequent debt reduction.
