History
Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) was established in 1972 to take over Macao's electricity supply, and it has operated under a long-term public concession ever since, including through Macao's 1999 handover from Portugal to China.
Business model
CEM is Macao's sole electricity transmission and distribution company and also runs local generating plants. Most of the electricity Macao consumes is imported from mainland China's Guangdong grid through interconnections, with local plants providing backup and peak capacity.
Market position
CEM holds the exclusive concession for electricity distribution in Macao.
Country impact
Reliable power supply is essential for Macao's casino resorts, which run around the clock. The territory's growing reliance on imported mainland electricity reflects its deepening economic integration with Guangdong and the Greater Bay Area.
