History

Bank South Pacific was established in 1974, shortly before Papua New Guinea's independence, as a subsidiary of an Australian bank, and later passed into local ownership. Its 2002 acquisition of the state-owned Papua New Guinea Banking Corporation made it the country's dominant bank, and it subsequently expanded across the South Pacific; it listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2022 alongside its listing in Port Moresby.

Business model

BSP provides retail, corporate, and government banking, along with finance, asset management, and insurance, in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, and Southeast Asian markets such as Cambodia and Laos. Its network includes rural branches and mobile banking aimed at the large unbanked population.

Market position

BSP is the largest bank in Papua New Guinea and the largest banking group in the South Pacific outside Australia and New Zealand, with Kina Bank and Australian banks as its main competitors in PNG.

Country impact

BSP holds a dominant share of deposits and loans in PNG, making it central to the country's financial system and a major taxpayer, and its profitability has drawn political scrutiny, including a special bank tax introduced in 2023.
