History

BioCubaFarma was created in 2012 to bring together Cuba's state biotechnology research centers and pharmaceutical factories, many of them founded in the 1980s under Fidel Castro's push to build a homegrown biotech industry. Its institutes, such as the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and the Center of Molecular Immunology, developed products ranging from vaccines to cancer therapies, and in 2021 it produced Cuba's own COVID-19 vaccines, Abdala and Soberana.

Business model

BioCubaFarma manufactures most of the medicines used in Cuba's health system and exports vaccines, biotech drugs, and diagnostics to dozens of countries, mainly in Latin America, Asia, and Africa. Notable products include Heberprot-P for diabetic foot ulcers and the lung-cancer vaccine CIMAvax-EGF, some of which have been licensed to foreign partners.

Market position

BioCubaFarma is small by global pharmaceutical standards, and its products are rarely approved in the US or the EU, but it is a significant biotech producer for a developing country and has built niche export markets.

Country impact

Biotech and pharmaceutical exports are among Cuba's few high-value-added exports, and the sector is a point of national pride and part of the country's medical diplomacy. Shortages of imported raw materials in recent years have nonetheless contributed to severe medicine shortages inside Cuba.
