History
BIDV, the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, was established as a state bank specifically tasked with financing infrastructure and construction investment during Vietnam's postwar reconstruction and later centrally planned development era. Following Vietnam's Doi Moi reforms, BIDV transitioned into broader commercial banking while retaining a particular institutional strength in infrastructure and long-term development financing, and was partially privatized through a public listing in 2014, with the Vietnamese state retaining majority ownership.
Business model
BIDV provides retail, corporate, and infrastructure-project financing across Vietnam, drawing on its historical specialization and deep institutional experience in financing large-scale investment and development projects, alongside a growing conventional retail-banking business. Its scale and state backing give it a significant role in financing Vietnamese government-linked infrastructure initiatives.
Market position
BIDV is one of the largest banks in Vietnam by total assets, generally ranked among the top state-owned banks alongside Vietcombank and VietinBank, with a particular institutional strength in infrastructure and development-project financing reflecting its founding mandate. It competes with both other state banks and a growing number of private Vietnamese banks.
Country impact
BIDV is one of the largest and most systemically important banks in Vietnam, and its historical mandate financing infrastructure development has made it closely tied to the country's substantial ongoing infrastructure-investment needs as Vietnam continues rapid industrialization and urbanization. It remains majority owned by the Vietnamese state.
