History

BHP began as the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, founded to mine a major silver, lead, and zinc deposit discovered at Broken Hill in outback New South Wales, and grew over more than a century into a diversified global mining giant. It merged with UK-based Billiton in 2001 to form BHP Billiton, a dual-listed company spanning Australian and British markets, before unifying into a single Australian-primary-listed structure, BHP Group, in 2022, simplifying a corporate structure that had persisted for two decades.

Business model

BHP mines and exports iron ore, copper, coal, and potash from large-scale operations primarily in Australia, Chile, and Canada, selling to steelmakers, industrial manufacturers, and agricultural customers worldwide, with China historically its single largest export market by far. Its strategy has increasingly emphasized 'future-facing' commodities like copper and potash, seen as benefiting from electrification and food-security trends, alongside its traditional iron-ore and coal base.

Market position

BHP is one of the two or three largest mining companies in the world by market value, competing closely with Rio Tinto and Brazil's Vale, particularly in iron ore, where all three are major global exporters to Chinese steelmakers. It is also one of the largest copper producers globally, a position it has sought to expand given rising demand for copper in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and grid infrastructure.

BHP is the largest company in Australia and a defining pillar of the country's resources-based economy, with its iron-ore and coal exports to China representing one of the largest single components of Australian trade.
