History
Banque pour le Commerce Extérieur Lao (BCEL) was established in 1975, the year of the communist takeover, as the state's foreign-trade bank. It was partly privatized and listed on the Lao Securities Exchange when the exchange opened in 2011, with the state remaining the majority shareholder.
Business model
BCEL provides deposits, loans, foreign-exchange, trade finance, cards, and digital banking services through branches and service units across the country.
Market position
BCEL is the largest commercial bank in Laos by assets and customers.
Country impact
As the main foreign-exchange and trade bank, BCEL was at the center of the 2022-23 currency crisis, when the Lao kip lost much of its value and access to dollars became scarce.
