History
Banque de Développement du Mali (BDM-SA) was created in 1989, succeeding an earlier state development bank, as part of a restructuring of the Malian banking sector. It became the country's leading bank and later expanded into a regional group with subsidiaries in other West African countries.
Business model
BDM-SA provides retail, corporate, and public-sector banking in Mali, financing trade, agriculture, and infrastructure, and has subsidiaries in countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union such as Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Guinea-Bissau.
Market position
BDM-SA is one of the largest banks in Mali by assets and deposits, competing with the Malian subsidiaries of regional groups such as Ecobank, Bank of Africa, and Coris Bank.
Country impact
As a long-standing national bank, BDM-SA is a key financier of the Malian state, public enterprises, and the cotton sector, and its regional expansion made it one of the few Malian companies with a significant presence outside the country.
