History

Banque Bemo Saudi Fransi was established in 2004 as one of the first private commercial banks in Syria after the government reopened the sector to private banks, with Lebanon's BEMO Bank and Saudi Arabia's Banque Saudi Fransi among its founding shareholders. It was listed on the Damascus Securities Exchange in 2009.

Business model

The bank offers personal and business banking, loans, mortgages, and investment services through about 30 branches across Syria.

Market position

Banque Bemo Saudi Fransi is one of Syria's largest private banks.

Country impact

The private banks licensed from 2004 were part of a short-lived economic opening in the 2000s, and their survival through the war makes them potential channels for reconstruction finance.
