Stock performance
History
Banka Kombëtare Tregtare (BKT, the National Commercial Bank) emerged from Albania's state banking system after the fall of communism and was privatized in 2000. Turkey's Çalık Holding later became its owner, and BKT expanded into Kosovo, growing into Albania's largest bank.
Business model
BKT offers retail, corporate, and investment banking, including deposits, mortgages, business loans, and digital banking, in Albania and Kosovo. A large share of its funding comes from household deposits, including savings built up from remittances.
Market position
BKT is the largest bank in Albania by assets, ahead of Raiffeisen Bank Albania, Credins Bank, and Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania.
Country impact
BKT's growth tracks the development of Albania's banking system from almost nothing in 1991 into a modern sector, and as the largest lender it plays a central role in financing construction, trade, and small businesses.
