History

Bank Rakyat Indonesia traces its roots to a small Dutch colonial-era savings and loan institution established to serve local Indonesian civil servants and, over time, rural communities, making it one of the oldest banks in the country. After Indonesian independence it was nationalized and developed a specific institutional mission around rural and microfinance banking, building an extensive network of village-level banking units to serve farmers and small entrepreneurs who lacked access to conventional urban banking, a focus it retained even after a partial privatization through public listing in 2003.

Business model

BRI specializes in micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise lending, alongside conventional retail and corporate banking, operating one of the largest branch and micro-banking-unit networks in Indonesia, reaching deep into rural areas most other banks do not serve. This micro-lending focus, while carrying higher individual credit risk than typical corporate lending, has proven durably profitable at BRI's scale given the sheer size of Indonesia's underserved small-business population.

Market position

Bank Rakyat Indonesia is the largest bank in Indonesia by assets and is widely regarded as one of the most successful microfinance-focused banks in the world by scale, a distinctive niche compared to Bank Central Asia's transaction-banking focus or Bank Mandiri's corporate-banking strength. The Indonesian government remains a majority shareholder.

Country impact

BRI plays an outsized role in extending formal financial access to rural and lower-income Indonesians and small businesses across the country's thousands of inhabited islands, making it an important instrument of Indonesian financial-inclusion policy alongside its commercial banking operations. It is one of the largest and most systemically important companies in Indonesia.
