History

Bank Pekao was founded to provide banking services to Polish emigrants and to facilitate financial transfers between Poland and Polish communities abroad, and it operated as a state bank through the communist era before being privatized in the late 1990s, when Italian bank UniCredit acquired a majority stake and ran it as part of its broader Central European banking network for nearly two decades. In 2017, Polish state-controlled insurer PZU and the Polish Development Fund acquired a majority stake from UniCredit, returning the bank to majority Polish ownership as part of a broader government policy push to increase domestic control over the country's banking sector.

Business model

Bank Pekao provides retail, corporate, and investment banking services across Poland, drawing on an extensive branch network and long-established brand recognition built over nearly a century of operation. Following its 2017 renationalization-style acquisition by Polish state-linked entities, it has operated with a strategic mandate more closely aligned with Polish government economic-development priorities than during its period of Italian ownership.

Market position

Bank Pekao is one of the largest banks in Poland, generally ranked second after PKO Bank Polski, and its 2017 return to majority Polish ownership was part of a broader and largely successful Polish government strategy to reduce the share of the domestic banking sector controlled by foreign banks, which had been unusually high following the country's 1990s privatization wave.

Country impact

Bank Pekao is one of the largest financial institutions in Poland, and its ownership history — moving from state control, to Italian ownership, and back to majority Polish state-linked control — reflects the broader arc of Polish banking-sector policy since the country's transition from communism. It remains a significant lender to Polish households and businesses.
