History

Bank Central Asia was founded in Semarang and grew into one of Indonesia's largest private banks under the ownership of the Salim Group, a major Indonesian conglomerate, before suffering a severe bank run and near-collapse during the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, when depositors, alarmed by the broader Indonesian banking crisis and political turmoil surrounding the fall of President Suharto, withdrew funds en masse. The Indonesian government took over the bank, recapitalized it, and it was later acquired by the Djarum Group and re-privatized through a public listing, emerging as one of the best-run and most profitable banks in the country.

Business model

BCA provides retail and commercial banking, including one of Indonesia's most extensive transaction-banking and digital-payment networks, which has made it a preferred bank for everyday consumer and business payments across the country. Its focus on transactional banking and fee-based services, alongside traditional lending, has become a defining part of its business model and profitability.

Market position

Bank Central Asia is the largest private bank in Indonesia by market value and one of the most profitable banks in Southeast Asia, competing with state-owned banks Bank Rakyat Indonesia and Bank Mandiri as well as other private lenders. Its reputation for financial discipline and strong risk management, built in the aftermath of its 1990s crisis recovery, has helped it sustain investor confidence and premium valuations.

Country impact

BCA is one of the largest and most important financial institutions in Indonesia, central to the country's payments infrastructure and business banking, and its recovery from near-collapse during the Asian financial crisis is often cited domestically as a case study in successful bank restructuring. It remains one of the most widely held stocks on the Indonesia Stock Exchange.
