Banesco
Stock performance
History
Banesco grew from a small brokerage acquired by banker Juan Carlos Escotet and partners in the 1980s into a universal bank through a series of mergers in the 1990s and 2000s, becoming Venezuela's largest private bank. Escotet's group later expanded abroad, including buying the Spanish lender NCG Banco, now Abanca, in 2013, while the Venezuelan government briefly intervened in Banesco's management in 2018 amid a crackdown on currency trading.
Business model
Banesco Banco Universal offers retail and corporate banking, payments, and digital banking services across Venezuela. Under prolonged hyperinflation and currency controls, its business shifted heavily toward payments and transactional services rather than lending.
Market position
Banesco is the largest private bank in Venezuela by deposits and customers, competing with the state-owned Banco de Venezuela and private rivals such as Mercantil and Provincial (BBVA).
Country impact
Banesco's payment and digital-banking platforms were central to how Venezuelans transacted during years of cash shortages and hyperinflation. Its continued private operation, alongside the state's large footprint in banking, reflects the uneasy coexistence of private enterprise and state control in Venezuela's economy.
