History

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) is the former state telecom monopoly. In 2011 the government sold a controlling stake to Cable & Wireless Communications, now part of Liberty Latin America, in a privatization that was politically controversial.

Business model

BTC provides mobile, fixed-line, and broadband services across the archipelago's inhabited islands, investing in submarine and inter-island networks.

Market position

BTC is one of the two main telecom operators in The Bahamas, competing with Aliv, the mobile operator backed by Cable Bahamas.

Country impact

Connecting dozens of inhabited islands is costly, and BTC's network is critical infrastructure that has to be rebuilt after hurricanes such as Dorian in 2019.
