Baha Mar
Stock performance
History
Baha Mar is a resort complex on Nassau's Cable Beach, financed largely by China's Export-Import Bank and built by China State Construction. Its developer went bankrupt in 2015 amid disputes over construction delays, and after the project was sold to Hong Kong's Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, the resort finally opened in stages from 2017.
Business model
Baha Mar operates hotels under the Grand Hyatt, SLS, and Rosewood brands, a large casino, convention facilities, a golf course, and a water park, drawing mainly US visitors.
Market position
Baha Mar is one of the largest resort developments in the Caribbean and, with Atlantis, one of the two dominant resort complexes in The Bahamas.
Country impact
Tourism accounts for a large share of Bahamian GDP and employment, and Baha Mar is one of the country's largest private employers; its troubled construction became a high-profile example of Chinese investment in the Caribbean.
