History

Avianca traces to SCADTA, founded in 1919 and among the oldest continuously operating airlines in the world, and grew into Colombia's flagship carrier over the following century. It merged with Central American carrier TACA in 2009, then filed for US bankruptcy protection in 2020 amid the pandemic-era collapse in air travel, emerging restructured in 2021, and later merged with Brazil's Gol and other Latin American carriers under a combined holding structure, Abra Group.
