History

Atlantis Paradise Island was developed in the 1990s by South African hotelier Sol Kerzner's Sun International, which transformed an older Paradise Island resort into a vast themed destination with a giant marine habitat and water park. After the 2008 financial crisis, ownership passed to creditors led by Brookfield.

Business model

Atlantis earns revenue from thousands of hotel rooms, a casino, restaurants, retail, a water park and aquarium, and conference business, attracting families and convention groups mainly from North America.

Market position

Atlantis is one of the largest resorts in the Caribbean and one of the best-known in the world.

Country impact

Atlantis has long been one of the largest private employers in The Bahamas, and its visitor numbers are a key driver of the tourism-dependent economy.
