History

Astra International was founded by William Soeryadjaya as a small trading company and grew, largely through securing exclusive Indonesian distribution and assembly rights for Japanese automakers including Toyota and Honda, into the country's largest diversified conglomerate. The Soeryadjaya family lost control of the company during Indonesia's 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis after a banking-related financial collapse forced them to sell their stake, and Astra has since operated under a broader, more institutionally diversified ownership and management structure, including a significant stake held by Indonesian conglomerate Jardine Cycle & Carriage.
