Asiacell was founded in Iraqi Kurdistan and became one of the first mobile-network operators to launch in Iraq following the fall of the Saddam Hussein government in 2003, when the country's telecommunications sector was rapidly liberalized after decades of state control and international sanctions had left Iraq with minimal telecom infrastructure. Qatar's Ooredoo later acquired a majority stake.
