ArcelorMittal
Stock performance
History
ArcelorMittal was formed through Indian-born steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal's audacious and initially hostile 2006 takeover of Arcelor, itself a recent merger of French, Spanish, and Luxembourgish steelmakers, creating the largest steel company in the world by production volume and one of the most dramatic corporate takeovers in European industrial history at the time.
Business model
ArcelorMittal mines iron ore and coal and manufactures steel products across an extensive global network of mills and mines spanning Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, serving automotive, construction, and industrial customers worldwide from one of the most geographically diversified steel-production footprints of any single company.
Market position
ArcelorMittal is one of the largest steel producers in the world by volume, competing with China's Baowu Steel Group and other major global steelmakers, and has faced sustained pressure from lower-cost Chinese steel production and the industry-wide challenge of decarbonizing traditionally carbon-intensive steelmaking.
Country impact
ArcelorMittal is headquartered in Luxembourg largely for tax and corporate-structure reasons stemming from Arcelor's origins, and while the country's own steel-production footprint is comparatively modest relative to the group's global scale, the company's presence reinforces Luxembourg's position as a preferred domicile for large multinational industrial holding companies.
