Ahold Delhaize
Stock performance
History
Ahold Delhaize was formed in 2016 through the merger of Dutch grocery group Ahold, whose Albert Heijn chain had roots stretching back to a single grocery shop opened in the 1880s, and Belgian retailer Delhaize Group, combining two of Western Europe's oldest and largest supermarket operators. Both predecessor companies had already built substantial US grocery operations through earlier acquisitions — Ahold owned Stop & Shop and Giant, while Delhaize owned Food Lion — giving the merged group an unusually large American retail footprint alongside its European base.
Business model
Ahold Delhaize operates supermarket chains across the Netherlands, Belgium, and a substantial portion of the US East Coast under various regional banners including Albert Heijn, Food Lion, Stop & Shop, and Giant, alongside a growing online grocery-delivery business. Running a portfolio of distinct regional and national brands rather than a single unified banner lets each chain maintain strong local customer loyalty while sharing group-level purchasing scale and logistics investment.
Market position
Ahold Delhaize is one of the largest grocery retailers in both the Netherlands and Belgium and one of the largest supermarket operators on the US East Coast, giving it a distinctive transatlantic retail footprint compared to most European grocers, which tend to be more regionally concentrated. It competes with Walmart and Kroger in the US and various national grocery chains across its European home markets.
Country impact
Ahold Delhaize is one of the largest companies in the Netherlands, and its Albert Heijn chain is the dominant supermarket brand domestically, deeply embedded in Dutch daily consumer life. Its substantial US operations also make it an important example of successful Dutch corporate expansion into the American retail market.
