Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC) was launched in 2002 by Afghan-American entrepreneur Ehsan Bayat, becoming Afghanistan's first mobile operator after the fall of the first Taliban government. It built a nationwide network and was the first in the country to roll out 3G and 4G services.
Business model
AWCC sells mobile voice, data, and internet services and mobile payments to millions of customers in all 34 provinces.
Market position
AWCC is one of Afghanistan's largest mobile operators, competing with Roshan and other mobile networks.
Country impact
The mobile networks built after 2001 were among the most visible economic successes of the reconstruction era, giving most Afghans access to phones and, increasingly, the internet, and they have continued to operate under the Taliban government since 2021.
