History

Advanced Info Service, commonly known as AIS, was founded to provide mobile telecommunications services in Thailand shortly after the technology began spreading globally, becoming one of the country's pioneering mobile operators as Thailand's telecom sector gradually opened to private operators. It grew alongside Thailand's rapid mobile-phone adoption from the 1990s onward, backed for a period by the telecommunications-focused business interests of former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra before ownership later shifted to Singapore's Singtel and other shareholders.

Business model

AIS provides mobile telecommunications, broadband internet, and increasingly digital-services offerings across Thailand, operating one of the country's largest and most extensive mobile-network infrastructures. Its scale and long-established brand recognition have made it a preferred operator for both consumer and enterprise telecommunications customers across the country.

Market position

AIS is the largest mobile-network operator in Thailand by subscriber count, competing primarily with True Corporation (following True's merger with rival DTAC) in a Thai mobile market that has consolidated into essentially a two-major-player structure. Its long operating history and network scale give it a durable leadership position in Thai telecommunications.

Country impact

AIS is one of the largest telecommunications companies in Thailand and a critical piece of the country's digital infrastructure, supporting both consumer connectivity and the broader digitalization of Thai commerce and government services. It remains one of the most significant and widely held stocks on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.
